Ruins of the Teutonic Castle in Radzyń Chełmiński

The ruins of a mighty, four-wing castle of a Teutonic commandery from 1310-1340, on Lake Zamkowe, north of the town of Radzyń Chełmiński. At its peak, it was the second largest Teutonic castle (after Malbork).

History

After the defeat at Grunwald, on 21 September 1410 the castle was seized by Polish troops returning from Malbork. During the Polish-Swedish war in 1628 it was heavily damaged - the Swedes blew up a significant part of the structure, and the ruins were abandoned. In 1837 demolition was halted, and two years later the first protective works began.

Condition

Preserved elements include: the southern wing with a chapel (without vaults), the façade at almost full height, two corner towers and the adjacent part of the eastern wing, as well as cellars with cross vaults.
