Ruins of the Teutonic Castle in Szczytno

A permanent ruin of a Gothic Teutonic castle with an outer bailey in Szczytno, between two lakes.

History

Initially a wooden stronghold (Ortulf von Trier); at the end of the 14th century it was replaced by a brick-and-stone Gothic structure - a quadrangular house 39 m per side with a corner tower. It was the seat of a procurator administering the southern borderland of the Teutonic state; during the Thirteen Years' War it was in Polish hands for 18 months. Between 1579 and 1581 Margrave Georg Friedrich modernised the complex (four round bastions, an expanded outer bailey).

Condition

Preserved are the brick walls of three wings (northern, eastern, western) with partial interior divisions and ground-floor pillars; the southern wing with the gate and tower survives only as relics of foundations. After 1990-1992, full reconstruction was abandoned and the site was secured as a permanent ruin.
