Ruins of the Teutonic Castle on the Island in Ełk

The ruins of a Teutonic castle on an island (today a peninsula) on Lake Ełckie, connected to the mainland by a bridge.

History

The Teutonic Knights built the castle between 1398 and 1406; construction was supervised by the commander and later Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Earlier, a Yotvingian watchtower stood on the islet. In 1410 it was destroyed by the troops of Władysław Jagiełło and soon rebuilt. After the secularisation of the Order (1525) it became the seat of a starost, then of the courts. After a fire in 1833 it was rebuilt and adapted into a prison, which operated until 1970; since then it has been in ruins.
