Romantic Ruins of the Wedel Family Castle in Drawno

The ruins of a medieval castle of the von Wedel family on Castle Hill in Drawno, by a lake.

History

Around the 10th century, a hillfort stood on Castle Hill. The von Wedel brothers built a castle here before 1296 - a rectangular, two-storey brick residential building, partly surrounded by a defensive wall, protected by the lake and a dry moat with a drawbridge. Between 1437 and 1478 the stronghold was occupied by the Teutonic Knights. In 1556 it was divided among cousins; Renaissance rebuilding followed (1592-1600). In 1675 it was destroyed by the Swedes, and during the Seven Years' War additionally by Russian troops. In the 19th century it was tidied up in the Romantic style.

Condition

To this day, mainly the eastern corners of the building have survived.
