Ruins of the von Dewitz Castle in Dobra

The ruins of the castle of the von Dewitz family on a hill at the northern edge of the town of Dobra (Łobez county), by the road to Nowogard.

History

The stronghold was probably founded in the 1280s (earliest mentions from 1287 and 1294). From 1338 it was owned by the von Dewitz family. The greatest rebuilding was carried out around 1538 by Jobst von Dewitz, chancellor of the Duchy of Wolgast, who transformed it into a Late Gothic residence with defensive features. During the Thirty Years' War the interiors were devastated by Brandenburg troops; in 1808 part of it was demolished for building material. Restoration work was financed in 1859 by the Prussian heir to the throne (the later Emperor Wilhelm I).

Condition

Brick ruins with Gothic and Renaissance elements, including authentic Renaissance plasterwork and Late Gothic tracery windows. Since 1945 there has been no conservation work - progressive degradation of the walls.
