Ruins of the Teutonic Castle in Grabiny-Zameczek

The remains of the castle of the Teutonic vogts (bailiffs) in Grabiny-Zameczek, on a small rise surrounded by earthen ramparts and a moat fed by the Kłodawa River. The only surviving Teutonic castle in the vicinity of Gdańsk.

History

After the Order seized Gdańsk Pomerania, Grabino became the seat of a vogt - a fortified manor was erected here. A flood (probably in 1381) destroyed the original fortification; at the beginning of the 15th century a rectangular brick complex (about 70-80 m) was built with a western wing and corner towers. During the Thirteen Years' War (1459) the people of Gdańsk captured and demolished the fortifications; in 1577 it was destroyed by the forces of Stephen Báthory. Later it became a suburban residence of the mayors of Gdańsk.

Condition

Preserved are the medieval cellars and a ground-floor hall in the former servants' room (serving as a chapel); a brick gate with the coat of arms of Gdańsk from the 17th century.
