Ruins of the Castle Church and Castle Hill in Mielnik

The ruins of the Late Gothic castle church at the foot of Castle Hill (a hillfort) in Mielnik on the Bug River, on the grounds of the so-called lower castle.

History

In the 11th century the stronghold of Mielnik, whose remains form today's Castle Hill, guarded the crossing of the Bug. The castle was built in the 15th century and expanded in the Renaissance style in the 16th century, then destroyed in the mid-17th century. The castle church was probably founded by Grand Duke Vytautas in 1420 - Late Gothic, built of brick with the use of field stones. It was finally burnt down in 1915.

Condition

The ruins of the church have survived; next to it a presbytery from the second half of the 18th century (currently a catechetical house).
