Castle Hill (hillfort) in Suraż

The remains of a former stronghold and castle - Castle Hill above the Narew in Suraż, near the church square.

History

The hillfort dates back to the times of Kievan Rus - one of the defensive strongholds erected by Yaroslav the Wise in the 11th century. Situated in a bend of the Narew, it originally rose more than 10 m above the river level, surrounded by an artificial moat (whose trace is today ul. Zamkowa). In 1553 the town was granted to Queen Bona, who rebuilt the stronghold into a castle with a stone tower. The castle burnt down on 9 May 1603 and was never rebuilt - only Castle Hill remained.
