Ruins of Sobień Castle

The ruins of a castle on a high hill above the San, between Lesko and the San (Manasterzec), in the Góra Sobień nature reserve.

History

The castle was built in the second half of the 14th century on the initiative of Casimir the Great, to strengthen the defensive potential on the Polish-Hungarian borderland (Red Ruthenia). In 1389 Władysław Jagiełło granted it to Piotr Kmita - from then on the main residence of the Kmita family. At the beginning of the 15th century the gate tower was expanded and the eastern residential wing was built.

Architecture and condition

Built on an irregular quadrilateral plan, with a stone gate tower in the north-western corner and a rectangular residential building to the east. Preserved are parts of the gate tower with window openings and fragments of the residential building.
