Grodziec Castle

A Late Gothic castle on a basalt hill (389 m above sea level) in the village of Grodziec (Zagrodno municipality), preserved as a partly restored ruin.

History

The first mention appears in a papal bull of 1155. Originally a stronghold of the Bobrzanie tribe during the reign of Bolesław I the Tall. Expansions under Bolko I (1296-1301) and successive Silesian dukes; Renaissance modifications in 1522-1524 (architect Wendelin Rosskopf). Destroyed by fire during the Thirty Years' War (1633). Bodo Ebhardt's conservation restoration (1906-1908) secured the ruins.

Architecture

Built on a hexagonal plan, with a palas and a mighty keep (over 26 m). The roof of the palas has been rebuilt; preserved are the donjon, the south-eastern walls and elements of the lower castle.
