The Main Market Square in Krakow

Location and surroundings

The Main Market Square is the central square of the Old Town in Krakow (District I), the city's largest square with an area of about 4 ha and a square shape with sides of about 200 m. It is one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe.

History

The square was laid out in 1257 during the incorporation of Krakow under Magdeburg law by Duke Boleslaw the Chaste (5 June 1257). Eleven main streets converged on it. In 1525 the Prussian Homage took place here, and in 1794 Tadeusz Kosciuszko took the oath that began the insurrection. From 1940 to 1945, under German occupation, it bore the name Adolf-Hitler-Platz. In 1979 it was closed to vehicle traffic.
