The Old Town Market Square in Warsaw

Location and surroundings

The Old Town Market Square is a historic square in the heart of Warsaw's Old Town, preserving its medieval layout. Warsaw's Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 2 September 1980.

History

The buildings around the square, almost entirely destroyed in 1944 (the destruction of the Old Town reached about 90-95%), were rebuilt in the years after 1945 (the main reconstruction of the Old Town was completed in 1953). The townhouses were recreated in their 17th- and 18th-century forms. The reconstruction drew, among other things, on paintings by Canaletto and pre-war surveys by the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. UNESCO recognised the exemplary reconstruction, which changed the conservation principles applied until then.
