The Market Square in Wroclaw

Location and surroundings

The medieval market square of Wroclaw has a rectangular shape of about 213 x 178 m and an area of about 3.8 ha. Together with the adjacent Salt Square, it is one of the largest market squares in Poland and Europe.

History

The boundaries of the square were laid out in the 13th century. Its central part is occupied by the inner-market block with the Old and New Town Halls and townhouses. The most important building is the Late Gothic Town Hall, whose tower is about 66 m high; it was built in stages over some 250 years (from the late 13th to the 16th century).
