The Old Town Market Square lies in the heart of the Old Town in Torun, whose medieval urban complex was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The Old Town covers an area of about 19 ha.

History

The chartered town of Torun was moved in 1236 to the southern part of the present Old Town; the current urban layout took shape between 1236 and 1251-1259. In 1274, following the granting of rights under Chelmno law, construction of the brick town hall began.
