The Old Market Square in Poznan

Location and surroundings

The Old Market Square has been the heart of the Old Town in Poznan since its incorporation in 1253. It is the third-largest market square in Poland (after those of Krakow and Wroclaw), with sides of about 141 m and 12 streets running out from its corners.

History

The square was laid out along with the incorporation of the town under Magdeburg law in 1253 and reached its final shape in the 15th century. The Renaissance Town Hall was rebuilt after a fire in the 16th century by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Quadro. On the town hall tower, the famous Poznan billy goats butt heads every day at noon.
