The Old Town Market Square in Lublin

Location and surroundings

The market square of Lublin's Old Town has an unusual trapezoidal shape and is surrounded by historic townhouses. In its centre stands the former Crown Tribunal (the Old Town Hall). The area of the Old Town has been listed as a Monument of History.

History

The square was laid out after Lublin was granted town rights (15 August 1317). After the fire of 1575, the wooden buildings were replaced by brick townhouses. In 1578 King Stephen Bathory established the Crown Tribunal - the highest court of appeal of the Commonwealth for Lesser Poland; its seat is in the building at the centre of the square.
