The Market Square in Sandomierz

Location and surroundings

The market square is the central square of the Old Town in Sandomierz, with a Gothic Town Hall in the middle. The historic architectural and landscape complex of Sandomierz was recognised as a Monument of History (2017).

History

Town rights were granted to Sandomierz by Duke Leszek the Black in 1286. After the great fire of 1349, the town was rebuilt on its preserved plan at the initiative of Casimir the Great - streets, the market square and the town hall were laid out. The 14th-century Gothic town hall (with a 16th-century Renaissance parapet) is considered one of the most beautiful in Poland.
