The Market Square in Tarnow

Location and surroundings

The market square in Tarnow lies in the centre of the Old Town, with a Renaissance Town Hall in the middle. Tarnow's Old Town is called the pearl of the Polish Renaissance.

History

The square was laid out during the incorporation of the town in 1330 according to the principles of medieval urban planning. Originally the buildings were wooden, from the 15th century brick; after fires the townhouses were transformed into Renaissance ones with arcades. The original mid-14th-century town hall (Gothic) was rebuilt, probably at the end of the 16th century, in the Renaissance style; the structure is 18 m high and the tower 30 m. In 1934 the urban layout of the town centre together with the market square was entered in the register of monuments.
