Market Square in Rzeszów

Location and surroundings

The Market Square is the central square of the Old Town in Rzeszów, measuring approx. 100 x 50 m and shaped like an irregular quadrangle, with the Town Hall in the corner. Beneath the square's surface and the tenement houses lies the Underground Tourist Route.

History

The first mention of the town hall dates back to 1427 (the town charter). The wooden building burned down in 1576. In 1842 a great fire destroyed a significant part of the buildings. The tenement houses, mostly one- and two-storey, have their roots in the 15th-16th centuries and acquired their final appearance by the end of the 20th century. Beneath the square a unique complex of 25 cellars and 15 corridors (14th-18th c.) has been preserved, with a total length of 369 m.
