Market Square in Cieszyn

Location and surroundings

A rectangular market square in Cieszyn with a fountain featuring a figure of St. Florian in the middle and the Town Hall on the southern side, surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque tenement houses with arcades.

History

The present market square was created under a decree of Duke Casimir II in 1496 and acquired its shape at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Earlier, the function of the marketplace was held by today's Old Market (Stary Targ). The Town Hall in its present form was completed in 1800 (designed by Ignacy Chambrez de Ryvos) and expanded in 1816 according to a design by Florian Jilg.
