Old Town Market Square in Olsztyn

Location and surroundings

The Old Town Market Square in Olsztyn is surrounded by tenement houses styled in Renaissance and Baroque, decorated with sgraffiti. Olsztyn is the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

History

The origins of the market square date back to the 14th century, along with the construction of the Old Town Hall and the granting of town rights. From the beginning the square served a commercial function. In 1945 the buildings around the square were largely destroyed; it was rebuilt in the 1950s, replacing the ruined eclectic tenement houses with buildings styled in Renaissance and Baroque, decorated with sgraffiti depicting figures who contributed to the Polish identity of Warmia and Masuria.
