Kościuszko Market Square in Białystok

Location and surroundings

Kościuszko Market Square is a representative, triangular square in the centre of Białystok, with the Baroque Town Hall in the middle. Białystok is the capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship.

History

The origins of the market square date back to the 15th century; it was created at the crossroads of the routes from Suraż, Wasilków and Choroszcz. The Baroque Town Hall with a clock tower was erected in 1745-1761 (on the initiative of Jan Klemens Branicki) - it was never the seat of the town authorities, but a commercial building. In 1919 the square's name was changed from the Market / Bazaar Square to Kościuszko Market Square. In 1941-1944 the city centre was destroyed; the town hall was dismantled in 1940 and rebuilt in 1953-1958 (since 1958 the seat of the Museum).
