Hay Market and Old Town Hall in Szczecin

Location and surroundings

The Hay Market (Rynek Sienny) was created in the Middle Ages as the main commercial square of the Old Town in Szczecin; the name comes from the hay trade. By the market stands the Gothic Old Town Hall.

History

The town hall was built for the town authorities in the 15th century on the site of a wooden building from the mid-13th century. In 1570 the sessions of the peace congress ending the Swedish-Danish war were held here; after being damaged it was rebuilt in the Baroque style. After 1945 the Old Town was about 80% destroyed; the town hall was rebuilt in 1972-1975 for the needs of the National Museum. Today it houses the Museum of the History of Szczecin.
