Old Market Square in Łowicz

Location and surroundings

The Old Market Square is a historic, triangular square in the centre of Łowicz on the Bzura River, surrounded by tenement houses from the 16th-19th centuries. Łowicz lies in the Łódź Voivodeship.

History

The market square was built in the second half of the 14th century as a marketplace and a venue for annual fairs. The original Gothic town hall in the centre was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century, and in 1828 a Classicist town hall building was erected according to a design by Bonifacy Witkowski. In the southern frontage stands the Renaissance Cebrowski tenement house.
