Market Square in Opole

Location and surroundings

The Market Square is the central square of the Old Town in Opole, retaining its medieval layout, with a Neo-Renaissance Town Hall referring to the Florentine Palazzo Vecchio.

History

Originally the town hall was a wooden merchant's house; in the 14th century it was rebuilt into a brick seat of the town authorities. The present building was erected in 1864, with a 60-metre tower. In 1934 the tower collapsed; it was quickly rebuilt in 1936 as a 65-metre one. The town hall survived the bombings during World War II and remains the seat of the town authorities.
