Market Square in Świdnica

Location and surroundings

The Market Square in Świdnica is the centre of the Old Town, considered one of the most valuable urban complexes of Lower Silesia. In the centre stands the Town Hall, and on the square there is a Baroque fountain with Neptune (1732).

History

Świdnica was founded in the 1240s and flourished in the 14th century as the capital of the Duchy of Świdnica-Jawor. The town hall was mentioned in 1318; the present building, originally Gothic, acquired its Baroque appearance after the remodelling of 1717-1720. The town hall houses the Museum of Old Commerce (since 1967).
