Market Square in Chełmno

Location and surroundings

The Market Square in Chełmno is the central square of the medieval town, with a Renaissance Town Hall situated slightly to the south-west of the centre of the square. Chełmno is located in the Vistula valley, in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship.

History

The town hall was erected in 1567-1572 on the site of an earlier, Gothic one (around 1298). The tower was built in 1584-1596, and the Baroque cupola (by Krzysztof Wagner of Gdańsk) dates from 1721. The building on a rectangular plan measuring 13.20 x 22.70 m and about 47 m high is considered one of the most beautiful monuments of the Renaissance in Poland. Since 1983 it has housed the Museum of the Chełmno Land.
