Market Square (Town Hall Square) in Jelenia Góra

Location and surroundings

The Jelenia Góra market square (Town Hall Square) is surrounded by historic tenement houses with characteristic arcades around the entire square - it is the only such preserved complete row of market arcades in Poland.

History

The facades of the tenement houses represent styles from the Renaissance through the Baroque to Classicism. The original town hall from the beginning of the 14th century was demolished after fires (1739). The present Baroque-Classicist Town Hall building was created in 1744-1749 according to a design by Christian Gottlieb Hedemann and remains the seat of the town authorities.
