Old Market Square in Łódź

Location and surroundings

The Old Market Square is a historic square that is the cradle of Łódź, part of the Łódź Old Town. In 2022-2025 it underwent a comprehensive redevelopment together with the renovation of the Old Town Park.

History

The history of the market square dates back to the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries; with the town charter in 1423 (a privilege of Władysław Jagiełło) it became the central place of the settlement. For centuries it was surrounded by wooden houses, and the only masonry building was the 16th-century town hall. In the 19th century the area became part of the Jewish quarter, and during World War II it was incorporated into the Łódź ghetto; after its liquidation part of the buildings was demolished.
