Main Market Square in Kalisz

Location and surroundings

The Main Market Square in Kalisz is a rectangular square measuring approx. 115 x 90 m, from which ten streets run out. Kalisz is considered one of the oldest towns in Poland.

History

The market square was laid out in the second half of the 13th century during the development of the chartered town founded by Duke Bolesław the Pious. The first town hall was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. It burned down during the great fire in September 1792. The present town hall building was erected in 1919-1925 according to a design by Sylwester Pajzderski; it has an almost 60-metre tower with a clock and a viewing terrace. The name Main Market Square was restored in 1989.
