Market Square in Bielsko-Biała

Location and surroundings

The Market Square is the central square of Bielsko's Old Town, lined with townhouses and arcades. The urban layout of the Old Town, with two streets running out at right angles from each corner, is typical of medieval Silesian towns.

History

The square was established as part of the town's foundation under German law at the beginning of the 14th century (first mentioned in 1312). As late as the 18th century, wooden buildings still dominated. The greatest influence on its present appearance came from the reconstruction after the great fires of 1808 and 1836. In 1953, the entire Old Town complex was placed under protection as a historic monument. In 2002, a comprehensive revitalisation of the Old Town began.
