Market Square in Nysa

Location and surroundings

The Market Square in Nysa was laid out in the 13th century during the town's foundation; measuring approximately 155 x 80 m, it is one of the largest market squares in Silesia. Nysa, formerly the capital of the episcopal Duchy of Nysa, is sometimes called the Silesian Rome.

History

The town hall was first mentioned in 1347; its most impressive expansion (with the characteristic tower) was carried out at the end of the 15th century under the direction of Jan Komgenstein. The present town hall was rebuilt in modern times (reconstruction completed in 2008). The Renaissance Municipal Weigh House, founded by Bishop Jan Sitsch, was erected between 1602 and 1604; it was damaged by Napoleonic troops in 1807 and by the Red Army in 1945 - rebuilt in stages and thoroughly renovated in 2011.
