Old Town Market Square in Przemyśl

Location and surroundings

The Przemyśl market square stands out for its unusual terrain - it lies on a slope, which gives it a unique character. The arcaded townhouses are characteristic. Przemyśl is the oldest centre of the Subcarpathian region and one of the oldest towns in Poland.

History

The origins of the square date back to the 14th century - the town's foundation. The town received its charter under Magdeburg law before 1320, confirmed by Władysław Jagiełło in 1389. The Renaissance town hall was erected in the mid-16th century (designed by the Italian Andrzej Bononi), but was demolished in 1794 by the partitioning authorities. The Old Town complex was recognised as a Historic Monument in 2018.
