Market Square (Freedom Square) in Bystrzyca Kłodzka

Location and surroundings

A small market square (Freedom Square) measuring approximately 85 x 60 m in the heart of the historic, medieval town of Bystrzyca Kłodzka; a large part of the square is occupied by the Town Hall. In the north-western part stands the Baroque Holy Trinity Column from 1736.

History

The first town hall is said to have existed as early as the 14th century, but it was destroyed during the Hussite Wars. It was rebuilt in 1540-1541, and the tower was completed in 1583. After fires (1703 and 1823) the building was demolished; the present edifice was erected in 1852-1854 on a quadrangular plan, loosely referring to the Florentine Renaissance.
