Market Square in Pułtusk

Location and surroundings

The Market Square in Pułtusk is a cobbled, rectangular square regarded as the longest market square in Europe - it is about 380 m long. Its axis is marked by the town hall tower. Pułtusk lies on the Narew River in the northern part of Mazovia.

History

Pułtusk received town rights in 1257 from Duke Siemowit. Of the old Gothic town hall, a Gothic-Renaissance tower has survived in the central part of the square, housing the Regional Museum; after World War II a neo-Gothic building of the present town hall was added to it. In 1806, near Pułtusk, a battle took place between Napoleon's troops and the Russians; the name of the town appears on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
