Tribunal Market Square in Piotrków Trybunalski

Location and surroundings

The Tribunal Market Square is the central square of the Old Town in Piotrków Trybunalski - the oldest part of the town, founded in the 14th century. Eight streets run out from the square; it is surrounded by more than 140 townhouses of predominantly Classicist architecture.

History

The planned town with its market square took shape in the 14th century. The town's name refers to the Crown Tribunal - from 1578 Piotrków was the seat of the Greater Poland circuit of the Tribunal (until 1792), where the nobility from Greater Poland, Kuyavia, Mazovia and Royal Prussia gathered. After the fire of 1835 the buildings of the square were rebuilt; some buildings retained their original barrel vaults and cellars.
