Market Square in Bochnia

The Market Square in Bochnia is the central square of the Old Town, regular and square in shape, located at the junction of eight streets. It was laid out around 1370 as a so-called secondary market square, to the east of the original square from the time of the town's foundation under Magdeburg law in 1253.

History

Within the square, three mining shafts used for salt extraction operated from the 14th to the 17th century. In the Middle Ages, a masonry town hall stood on the square, housing the town archive, chancellery, prison and armoury.

Architecture

The buildings of the square are mainly townhouses from the second half of the 19th century, though older structures from the 17th and 18th centuries have survived. Eight buildings by the square are entered in the register of monuments.
