Fort Gerhard (Świnoujście Fortress)

Location and surroundings

Fort Gerhard (the Eastern Fort, Werk II) lies in the eastern part of Świnoujście, in the Warszów district on the island of Wolin, near the lighthouse.

History

Construction of the fort began in 1848 and was completed in 1859. The name comes from the author of the design (Gerhard Cornelius). It is one of the best-preserved 19th-century Prussian coastal forts in Europe. In 2001 the Museum of Coastal Defence was established here.

What to see

Guided tours with a guide dressed as a Prussian soldier (a form of re-enactment), museum exhibitions (over 2000 exhibits) on the development of Świnoujście Fortress.
