Osowiec Fortress

Location and surroundings

Osowiec Fortress lies in the village of Osowiec-Twierdza (Goniądz municipality) in Podlasie, within Biebrza National Park, among the vast Biebrza marshes.

History

Construction of the fortress took place between 1882 and 1892. Four forts were built at that time: Central (I), Zarzeczny (II), Szwedzki (III) and Nowy (IV). The fortress became famous for never having been captured.

What to see

A forest path over 4.5 km long around the ruined Fort IV is open; you can see the powder magazine, cannons and the ruins of the moat and fortifications. Some structures (Fort I, Fort III) are closed to tourist traffic.
