Fortified Region "Silesia"

Location and surroundings

The Fortified Region "Silesia" is a Polish line of fortifications from the 1930s, stretching across Upper Silesia (including the areas of Bytom, Piekary Śląskie and Dobieszowice), in the Silesian Voivodeship.

History

The chain of combat shelters (about 180 structures) was built between 1933 and 1939 to defend the Upper Silesian Industrial Region against aggression from the Third Reich. The line stretched for about 60 km between the Tąpkowice area and Mikołów.

What to see

Selected shelters converted into museum chambers made accessible by the "Pro Fortalicium" Association for the Preservation of Fortifications (including combat shelter no. 52 in Dobieszowice, shelters in Bytom-Miechowice and Łagiewniki).
