An enormous complex of reinforced concrete structures from World War II on the outskirts of Tomaszow Mazowiecki. The bunker in Jelen - alongside the twin bunker in Konewka (14 km away) - was built to protect special trains (mobile command centres) and their personnel from air attack. Construction began in 1940.
The largest structure is a railway bunker about 355 m long, 15 m wide and 9 m high, curved in an arc. The complex includes, among others, a power plant with a ventilation room, a boiler room and a pumping station.
The site is accessible free of charge all year round. A good torch, warm clothing and appropriate footwear are required (constant temperature about 10 deg. C). The forest road to the site is not open to public traffic - leave the car by the road and walk the rest of the way.
