The castle is located in Wałbrzych at ul. Piastów Śląskich 1, on a headland surrounded by forests and ravines. It is the third largest castle in Poland and the largest in Lower Silesia.
The castle was built from the Middle Ages onwards and, over the following centuries, was rebuilt many times, including in the Baroque style. For centuries it was the residence of the von Hochberg family. During World War II the castle was taken over by Nazi Germany, and work was carried out in its underground tunnels as part of the 'Riese' project.
