The castle is located in Niepołomice (Lesser Poland Voivodeship), on the edge of the Niepołomice Forest, approximately 25 km from Kraków.
The castle was built as a royal hunting residence, associated with the hunting expeditions of Polish rulers into the Niepołomice Forest. During the Renaissance it was extended into an imposing building with an arcaded courtyard, sometimes called the 'second Wawel'. Today it houses the Niepołomice Museum.
