The castle is situated in Ryn (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship), in the town centre, on the isthmus between Lake Ołów and Lake Ryńskie.
The Gothic castle was built for the Teutonic Order around 1377, during the tenure of Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode, on the site of an earlier, smaller guardhouse. It served as the seat of a commandry and as a base for expeditions towards Lithuania. After 1990 the building was converted into a hotel.
