The castle is located in Brzeg (Opole Voivodeship), at Plac Zamkowy 1, about 40 km south-east of Wrocław.
The castle was the residence of the Silesian Piasts - the dukes of Brzeg. During the Renaissance, in the 16th century, it was rebuilt into a magnificent residence with a stately gate decorated with likenesses of the dukes and Polish rulers. It is sometimes called the 'Silesian Wawel'. Today it houses the Museum of the Silesian Piasts.
