Royal Castle in Szydłów

A royal castle from the times of Casimir the Great, situated on an escarpment sloping down towards the valley of the Ciekąca River, within the defensive walls of the former town (Świętokrzyskie Province). Szydłów is sometimes called the Polish Carcassonne.

History

The castle was probably built on the initiative of King Casimir the Great, who visited Szydłów as many as 17 times.

What you can see

The ruins of the residential part have survived - the so-called Skarbczyk (Treasury) from the 15th-16th century, along with the gatehouse. After renovation in 2019, the Skarbczyk was roofed over and adapted for tourism. Among other things, you can see the private royal chamber with a fireplace and medieval hypocaust heating stoves.
