Szymbark Castle

A 14th-century castle in the village of Szymbark (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship), built by the Pomesanian Chapter and later converted into a family residence. It is the second-largest Gothic castle in Poland after Malbork.

History

The castle was probably built between 1378 and 1386 on the initiative of Henryk of Skarlin, provost of the Pomesanian Chapter.

Current state and trivia

The castle remains a partially preserved ruin. It was here that some scenes of Volker Schlöndorff's film The Ogre (1996), starring John Malkovich, were shot.
