Rabka-Zdrój
The Polczakówka viewing tower stands on Królewska Góra (588 m above sea level), barely three kilometres from the centre of Rabka-Zdrój. It was opened in 2011; the wooden structure is about 25 metres tall and a hundred steps lead up to the viewing platform. The site is freely accessible and requires neither a reservation nor a guide, which makes it a popular goal for walks at any time of day.
The name of the tower refers to the nearby Polczakówka ski station spread across the slopes on the western side of the hill. In winter the area is busy with skiers, in summer it turns into a convenient walking area for spa guests and tourists visiting the resort.
The panorama from the top covers almost a full 360 degrees. The ridges of the Gorce range and the rolling humps of the Beskid Wyspowy lie closest, with the characteristic outline of Babia Góra further away. When the air is clear, usually after a weather front has passed or early in the morning, the Tatra Mountains appear on the horizon.
Climbing to the top of the structure takes a few minutes, but it is easy to spend far longer on the platform picking out further peaks and valleys. Bring binoculars and something warm to wear, because the wind up there is stronger than at the foot of the hill.
A blue trail starting at Kościuszki Street in Rabka-Zdrój leads up to Królewska Góra. The second option is the approach from Rabka Zaryte, along the ski slope. Both routes are short and technically easy, so children will manage them without trouble.
A wayside shrine of the Weeping Mother of God stands right next to the tower and makes a natural stop for a short rest. Rabka-Zdrój itself is worth combining with a visit to its spa parks and museums; the resort has specialised in family holidays for years.
