A stone dam on the Wilczka

The water dam in Międzygórze stands right at the entrance to the village, in the valley of the Wilczka river at the foot of the Śnieżnik massif, within the Śnieżnik Landscape Park. The structure was built more than a hundred years ago as part of the flood protection of a valley repeatedly hit by violent surges of the mountain stream.

The construction is about 29 metres high and roughly 108 metres long. The massive wall of stone blocks impresses not only with its size, but also with the way it fits into the narrow, wooded valley.

The view from the footbridge

A metal footbridge runs along the crest of the dam, suspended about thirty metres above the valley floor. This is the most popular spot among visitors: the view down onto the face of the structure and the bed of the Wilczka, and in the other direction onto the panorama of the surrounding ridges, is among the strongest impressions in Międzygórze.

For years the structure required stabilising work; today it is secure and open to tourists. The walk across the footbridge itself takes a few minutes, but the place invites a longer stop.

Access

The dam lies about two hundred metres from the main road, at the beginning of Międzygórze, so reaching it takes no effort. You can also walk up along the green trail, the same one that continues towards the sanctuary of Maria Śnieżna; from the centre of the village it is about twenty minutes on foot.

The surroundings

Międzygórze is a former spa town with characteristic wooden architecture of Alpine origin, a fairy-tale garden and a dense network of trails. A visit to the dam is best combined with a walk to the Wilczka waterfall or a longer trip up Śnieżnik.
