ul. Do Kopca, Piekary Śląskie
The Liberation Mound was raised between 1932 and 1937 on a rise in Piekary Śląskie reaching 356 m above sea level. It was built to mark the 250th anniversary of the march of King Jan III Sobieski's hussars to Vienna and the 15th anniversary of the eastern part of Upper Silesia joining Poland.
The work was a community effort — earth was carted in and piled up collectively, and those who took part are recorded in a Golden Book with signatures and seals of individuals, organisations and associations. A plaque before the entrance honours Wojciech Korfanty and the Silesian insurgents, for whom the mound remains a symbol.
From the top you can see the towers of the Piekary churches and basilica and the winding tower of the „Julian” coal mine. To the north the view takes in Kozłowa Góra, the lake at Świerklaniec and Winna Góra, and to the west Księża Góra. The climb is short and needs no preparation.
